Finding Your Spirit Guide

Finding your spirit guide does not have to be a difficult task and can be done by anyone with a little practice and an open mind.  I first read about spirit guides many years ago and was blessed to have met mine in a dream.  To this day I still reach out to my guide frequently to discuss my life ahead of me.

My Story

I first read about Spirit Guides a little over 10 years ago when I read Life on the Other side by Sylvia Browne.  This is where I learned that we each have a guide that helps us chose our lives and the lessons within that cycle.  They stay with us through our incarnation here on Earth and help us to stay on our chosen path.

I first met my guide and higher self in a dream.

A couple years later after reading the book I was blessed to have a dream one night where I went to meet with not only my guide, but also my higher self.  While I don’t recall the specifics of the conversation in that dream, I do clearly remember what my guide looks like.  My higher self on the other hand was hidden from me behind a shadow.

“The dream started off with me riding a mountain bike down a hillside trail.  After a little bit I crossed over a very small stream, only about 2 feet wide or so.  After that I found my way into a clearing surrounded by trees.

There was a man there that was wearing a light tan or off white robe.  He had a very distinguished looking face with his dark hair combed straight back.  He was holding a staff as well and I vaguely remember that it was an ancient item that had something to do with horses.

The three of us had our conversation over the next few minutes and then said our goodbyes.

I do regret that this happened at a time when I was not writing down my dreams, though I was still very thankful to have had the experience.  In the long run it really helped to open the door for future communications.

The Door was Opened

The door to many new possibilities was now open.

Not long after this dream is when I started to meditate on a much more frequent basis.  It was during these times that I would always take a few minutes to give thanks to my guide and higher self for helping me through this life cycle.  Little by little, I realized over time that I had found a way to communicate with my guide.

At some point along the way I was troubled by something and when I got to the part in my meditation where I thanked my guide I instead asked a question of him.  To my surprise I quickly heard an answer in my head and thus my first discussion in a non-dreaming state occurred.

Since that time, I now go through my normal mediations with an extra step where I take time to communicate with my guide about the things going on in my life and the direction I am headed.  This has helped me greatly in many different areas of my life, this site included!

My Process and What Worked for Me

I worked out a process during my meditations to communicate with my guide.

Prior to communicating directly with my guide I would use a simple meditation process where I would do a prayer of protection first, thank my guide and higher self next, from there I would go through another prayer and finally would wrap things up with quiet meditation focused on my breath.

Once I started communicating with my guide I added a few little tweaks to my process.  First before I would start meditating, I would set my intent to communicate with my guide as well as what specific or general area that I wanted to ask questions about.  Obviously I also added in a timeframe to speak with my guide and I placed this after I would thank him and my higher self.

Another key component that really helped me was to keep an open mind about it all.  Maybe I was talking to my guide or maybe it was just all my imagination, the point though is that it was helping me in life.  With that, should it really matter if it was real or not?  The benefits were there, so I went with it and will continue to do so.

Awaken Spirit Guides – 8 Module Course.

While I stumbled through my process and developed it on my own through trial and error, there are many different ways of finding your spirit guide.  I have read books and watched various YouTube videos on the subject, all of which contributed to how I go about things.

Sometimes though when it comes to learning a new skill, I also recognize the need for a structured program to walk me through it step by step.  If this is how you learn best, then you might be interested in the rather affordable program here at Awaken Spirit Guides.  It is an 8 module course provided to you by Dr. Steve G. Jones, Ed.D a noted hypnotherapist.

Another tool that I had used earlier in life was the book Contacting Your Spirit Guide by Sylvia Browne.  This book and CD combo came at a very early point in my spiritual journey and I must admit that at that particular time I was not ready for it.  However, it was still very valuable information that in the long run did help me get to where I am today.

Please share your thoughts and perspective with us.

One thing that I would like to discuss with you before you go and that this is not an instant kind of thing.  Just like with any skill it will take some time and practice.  For some it may come easy and for others you may have to work at it for quite a bit.  The most important thing though is to keep working at it until you find what is right and what works for you.

Lastly I would ask that you please share any tips you may have from your own journeys on your spiritual path.  You never know, it might be your words of wisdom that unlock this skill for someone else!  Also, if you have any questions, please feel free to leave them in the comment section as well and I will do my best to answer them for you.

Thanks for stopping by today and I hope to see you back around again!

  1. Fascinating subject. As a fan of Sylvia Browne I have read nearly every book she ever wrote, and I do have the book and CD you mentioned. You are very fortunate to have met your guide in this way. I will keep working on it and hope to have an experience like yours someday. I have visited with my deceased father in dreams a couple of times. They were much more vivid than regular dreams and I can still remember them clearly. Each time I awoke from from these dreams my clock read 3:18 a.m. My dad’s birthday was March 18. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Love your website!

    • Carol, first off thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I don’t think it was a coincidence either. Numbers and synchronicities like that are the road signs in life that let us know we are traveling in the right direction.

Sylvia Browne helped me to really start going down my spiritual path in earnest and I am very thankful for her. She brought a tremendous value into my life and I am doing my best to pass it forward!

  2. Hello Jaweda,

Fist of all I like your site and I like what you are talking about. A spiritual guide is very very important in any everyone’s life. When you have a spiritual guide you are in a safe zone.
I like how you added tweaks and how you set questions before you start meditating. You really stated important things that will help some of us.
Thank you very much for the great information.

    • Stating my intentions before I begin meditating has helped me a lot. The first time or two I did this process it came to me naturally and I had a lot of questions to ask. However, as they were answered I didn’t always know where to go next. That is when I started setting intentions before hand and it helped keep me on the right track.

Even if I didn’t have any particular questions to ask, I would at least set the intention of knowing what I would want to ask when the time came and it worked.

  3. Fascinating story and post. I’ve always felt my guides near, especially at critical times. I’ve never taken a course about how to develop my relationship further with them, but I can see how it would be valuable. It makes sense that they would come closer if invited. I appreciated reading your story. Do you use meditation daily to connect with yours? …and do you find that your relationship is strengthened by doing so? Thanks

    • Jackie, I don’t try to connect with my guide on a daily basis, but I will at least once a week if not 2 or 3 times. Each time I communicate with my guide I find it easier and easier, just like building any other skill.

Since I have started doing this I have found answers to many of my issues and have been able to make course corrections to help me learn from and move on from them. I have also found that this process really helps me to slow down and not be so quick to judge things. The more you back away and look at the world from a larger perspective the easier it becomes to navigate.

  4. I don’t think I’ve ever met my spiritual guide although I do get what you mean. I realised I have become more spiritual instead of religious of late.

A couple of years ago I started examining my life as I found it lacking a higher purpose. Through joining a few community projects, I realise it’s about serving or giving back.

That’s when concepts like LOA, energy healing, subconscious block and spirituality starts becoming real to me.

I’ve also brought back mindfulness practice in my life after living mindlessly for years.

    • Learning how to get in touch with my guide has been a very special boon for me. I am humbled that I have had success in doing it and hope that I can continue to develop the skill as well so that I may be stronger and able to help others more. To me, life certainly is about Love and giving back to others. I think that is a higher purpose that we can all live up to.

Best of luck to you on your journey Kenny. I have read a lot of your work and I can see that you are certainly on a good path.

For anyone reading this comment I would say it is certainly worth your while to click on Kenny’s website here and to read his perspectives.

  5. Wow that was a beautiful dream, it really would have been great if you would have written it down because that would have not only helped you but we would have also learned something, yet it is never too late.

I use a different program for connecting with m higher self and in that it was clearly state that it is a must to write down the conversations with the guides but I was too lazy to do so, then I realized that even though we feel we are totally awake during such meditations we are not. We go into the alpha state (a more relaxed state than waking one) when we meditate and we forget most of the things that we experience while meditating soon after waking up.
Good to hear that you have established a deep connection with your guides, a support from the spiritual world can do miracles.

    • Hari, the dream did come at a very early phase in my journey and at the time I wasn’t 100% sure what it was. It was only after some thought on the process that it dawned on me. I do wish I had a better recall of the dream, but just being able to remember what my guide looks like has been extremely helpful for me.

Thank you for pointing out that tidbit about being able to remember things from meditation. Often the things that happen during meditation do slip through the mind not long after. Writing down the communications will only serve to help you move forward in a positive fashion.

I believe I have now established a pretty solid connection with my guide. The very last time I communicated with him, I asked him his name and he chuckled. Several names popped right to mind, but my guide put his arm around me and said that my left brain was too active right now to discuss that. It made me laugh as there was an obvious sense of humor with it as well.
